Mrs. G. Casey’s class got fantastic news on 11th February. A project the class had entered won a plaque and has the distinction being copied to go to every teaching training college for display. If you go to Dublin drop in to see it in the Irish Aid Headquartes, O Connell St., . The plaque is displayed in the crush hall of the school . Well Done Girls.

We would like to remind everyone that our SAVINGS CLUB will run again this year. This is a great way to put a little aside every week / fortnight to defray costs of books , uniforms etc for next year. the savings club will be open every Tuesday morning, 8.30a.m. - 9.15a.m. in the school library. Everybody welcome, so why not join our SAVINGS CLUB today.

One Book , One Waterford.

The Home School Community Liason Office and Waterford City Council Library Services are delighted to announce the launch of One Book, One Waterford in St. Pauls Community College, Waterford. This is a literacy initiative aimed at the pupils in sixth class and first year secondary school. The book, “Titanic Tragedy” was launched by the Mayor, Councillor John Halligan and the author, Vincent McDonnell on 2nd March. We encourage everyone to get involved in the reading of this book.

Green Flag

The Green Schools Committee are delighted to announce we have been awarded our 4th Green Flag. Thanks to everyone who offered support during the year. Our W.O.W. days have been very successful and we hope to continue with them when the weather improves. Members of the committee attended the awards ceremony in Kilkenny on 2nd March. Well done to everyone and the committee hopes we all will be putting back on our walking shoes again soon.

First Penance

Children from Second class are continuing on their faith journey. On 9th february 70 children from second class received the Sacrament of Penance at a ceremony in the Holy Family Church. Thanks to Fr. Tom Rogers who officiated assisted by priests from neighbouring parishes.

It’s good to be back to school following the unprecedented spell of poor weather recently. The text-a-parent facility which we used to inform everyone that school was open on Tuesday12th is a service we will be providing in the future. It is very important that all mobile numbers on file are accurate and up to date.There will be an additional school closure on Thursday 11th next at 12:00 noon to facilitate a staff training seminar. All pupils will be allowed home at mid-day.

**Pre-School Concert will be held on Friday 18th December in the school hall.

**Cake sale/fun day will be on Friday 11th December this year- the whole school looks forward to this day of celebration with shopping & cakes galore & of course our special guest Santa Clause. We are still accepting good quality toys/books/gift items for sale on the day. Feel free to drop any items in to the school office or to Teresa in the parents room.

**The mobile farm visited the school yard on Wednesday Nov. 18th. All children from infants to Rang 2 got a chance to learn about the animals on show: calves; sheep; goats; a pig; turkey; hen & chickens; duck & ducklings & rabbits. All children had great fun as everyone got to hold a chick, duck or rabbit.

RAINBOWS

RAINBOWS is a peer support system that can be used in school for children aged 5-12 who are grieving because of death, seperation, divorce or other painful transition. In the Mercy schools we support children from Rang 1 - Rang 6.

RAINBOWS helps by providing a safe setting in which children can share feelings, emotions and struggles with others who have similar experiences. They are supported in this process by a trained facilitator.

RAINBOWS Facilitors are adults who care about the grief of participants, who are able to listen to what they say and who are supportive of themas they move through the grieving process. The programme is devided inti 2 blocks of 6 weeks, each of which is concluded with a “Celebrate Me Day”.

RAINBOWS helps by:

Supporting children to re-build their self esteem.
Enabling children to name, understand and come to terms with the emotions they feel.
Reassuring children who have anxieties or feelings of guilt.
Encouraging children to move towards forgiving those people whom they feel have caused their pain.

ROAD SAFETY:

All classes have been concentrating on road safety week October 12th–16th and all children know the “Safe Cross Code. On the 15th October Garda Fenlon visited and spoke to 3rd & 4th classes in the senior school about road safety. They did activities on travel and the enviroment.

W.O.W (Walk on Wednesdays) is continuing for this year again. We are delighted to see so many children walking on Wednesdays and we hope to extend this to other days.

Green School Action Day: On Thursday October 15th (An Taise) Yvonne Kelly & Ciara Hanrahan facilitated a day of action games relating to the “Travel Theme” for our 4th green flag. On Friday 16th October Ella Ryan (enviornmental officer) talked to some classes about climate change.

Swine Flu

We are all aware of the ’swine flu’ pandemic sweeping across the globe. To our knowledge there have been no reported outbreaks in our school community and we hope to keep it this way. The Board of Management and school staff have been vigilent in ensuring that every precaution has been taken to help prevent the spread of flu - like symptoms. Your child has brought home a handout outlining what precautions we have in place. Older children were asked to bring tissues and hand sanitizers to school to use throughout the day. The school is supplying wipes for desks and other work surfaces. The importance of proper hand washing is also stressed with children. We are using the ‘Catch It - Bin It - Kill It’ method as recommended by the HSE. We ask that all parents and guardians encourage good hygiene and be assured that the schools will follow HSE advice if / when the need arises.
